What are tantalum capacitors?

Tantalum capacitors are a special type of electrolytic capacitor. They use tantalum metal as the anode, which is coated with an oxide layer that acts as a dielectric medium. The oxide layer is very thin and is surrounded by a conductive cathode. This unique construction offers several advantages, including a higher capacitance-to-volume ratio, superior frequency response, and significant long-term stability.

Tantalum capacitors are polarised, so the correct terminal polarity must be used when connecting to a DC power supply. However, they can fail catastrophically, leading to fire and explosions. Safety measures such as current limiters or thermal fuses can reduce these risks.

New technology has made tantalum capacitors more common in many devices, including laptops, cars, and cell phones. These capacitors save space on printed circuit boards, allowing for more components to be placed on them.

Applications for tantalum capacitors

Tantalum capacitors have low leakage current, high capacity, and are reliable. They are important in sample-and-hold circuits, using their low leakage current to hold things in place for a long time. They are also used in power supplies for devices like computer motherboards and cell phones because they are small and stable. Military-grade tantalum capacitors are used in military applications because they can withstand high temperatures and don't lose their charge over time. They are also used in medical electronics and audio amplifiers because they are very stable.
