What are Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLCs), which are also commonly referred to as Supercapacitors, ?
A supercapacitor is a double-layer capacitor with two plates that generate an electric field. They charge and discharge quickly and have a high capacitance, making them ideal for electric vehicles.
Advantages of Supercapacitors:
1. It lasts a long time and has been charged and discharged thousands of times. Capacitors last much longer than rechargeable batteries. This makes them more environmentally friendly. Rechargeable batteries usually wear out in a few years. Their chemical electrolytes can be dangerous to dispose of. Only charge at the right speed and use as few chemicals as possible to make the battery last longer. The electric double-layer capacitor is used with the battery to balance loads, store energy, and provide backup power.
2. Low cost per cycle.
3. Reversibility.
4. Easy to charge. You don't need to test the charging. It won't overcharge.
5. It charges and discharges quickly.
6. Improved safety, non-corrosive, low toxicity.
Disadvantages of Supercapacitors:
1. Low internal resistance allows fast discharge. A short circuit is more dangerous than other types of batteries.
2. Absorbs the most dielectric.
3. It discharges quickly.
4. You need less voltage in series to get more. You may also need to balance the voltage.
5. The voltage of electric double layer capacitors drops when energy is released. It needs complex electronic control and switching equipment, which uses energy.
