Introduction of Float, Level Sensors - Industrial

Float and level sensors, specifically designed for industrial applications, monitor the level of liquids or the position of loose materials within a container. Commonly utilizing mechanical, electronic, or ultrasonic principles for precise level measurement, these sensors play a vital role in industries such as chemical processing, water treatment, and food manufacturing for level control and monitoring.

What Are Float And Level Sensors?

Float and level sensors are instruments designed to measure the level of liquids or the position of solid materials. They detect level variations through the movement of a float or by employing various mechanical, electronic, or ultrasonic methods. These sensors are commonly utilized in industries like chemical processing, water treatment, and food manufacturing for effective level monitoring and control.

Operation of Float Level Sensors

Float level sensors operate in three main stages: rise, fall, and signal transmission.

Rise Stage

In the rise stage, as the liquid level in the tank or container increases, the float also ascends. This upward movement causes the magnet within the float to approach the switch. In the case of a magnetic reed switch, the proximity of the magnet activates the switch, while in a mechanical switch, the float’s movement directly triggers the switch.

Fall Stage

During the fall stage, when the liquid level in the tank decreases, the float descends as well. As the float drops, the magnet moves away from the switch, deactivating it. For mechanical switches, the float’s movement immediately turns off the switch.

Signal Transmission

In the final stage, the switch sends a signal to the control system to indicate the liquid level in the tank or container. This signal can be a simple on/off indication or an analog signal that reflects the specific liquid level.
