What are Connectors
Connectors are essential electronic components that are used in almost every piece of electrical or electronic equipment we use or come into contact with on a daily basis. Correct selection depends solely on the project, application or environment.
A connector is an electronic component that allows two pieces of equipment to be coupled together. Connectors provide a path for voltage, current or signals to flow freely from one device to another. Most connectors comprise of two parts, a plug and a socket. Traditionally, connectors are referred to by a gender to aid identification, the male and the female. And The plug or the male part of the connector housing usually contain the contacts. The contacts or pins are solid protruding pieces of metal that electrical conductors are attached to.
The socket or the female part of the connector housing contains hollow metal contacts. The female contacts are designed to hold or retain the male contacts. When both male and female parts of the connector come together they mate. Connectors include heavy-duty industrial connectors, power connectors, modular connectors, electrical connectors, and electronic and data connectors. And they are divided into the following categories: Power Connectors, RF and Coaxial Connectors, PCB Connectors, Audio and Video Connectors, Circular Connectors, Network and Telecom Connectors, Mains and IEC Connectors, USB, D-Sub and Computing Connectors, Terminal Blocks and DIN Rail Terminals
Types of Connectors
Wire Connectors
Wire Connectors are also known as Twist-on connectors, wire nuts, thimble connectors and cone connectors. There are 5 types of wire connectors available, such as Butt Connectors, Splice Connectors, Wire tap Connectors, T-tap Connectors and Heat shrink Connectors.
Board-to-Board Connectors
Board-to-board connectors link two printed circuit boards (PCBs) directly, so you don’t need cables. They usually have a male and a female part and can be mounted on PCBs using either through-hole or surface mount methods. You can connect the PCBs either perpendicular or parallel to each other. For stacking, a mezzanine connector is used, while an edge connector aligns with the edges of single-sided or double-sided PCBs.
Box Header Connectors
Board-to-board connectors come in different header styles. For box headers, the terminals are enclosed within the header. Pin headers, on the other hand, have terminals that are visible and not enclosed.
Backplane Connectors
A backplane acts as a central framework to connect multiple PCBs, lining up the pins from one board with the pins on others. This type of connector is often used in computers and telecom equipment to help data flow between various components.
